Position Overview

The Innovation Engineer will play a pivotal role in developing next-generation packaging machinery and automation technologies. Reporting directly to the Director of Innovation, this role blends hands-on mechanical design, simulation analysis, and cross-functional collaboration across multiple business units.

The ideal candidate is a creative problem-solver with strong technical rigor—someone who can translate complex concepts into tangible product innovations.

This is a hybrid position requiring three days per week onsite at the Red Wing, MN facility.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Development: Lead the design of new or enhanced packaging machinery using advanced SolidWorks modeling and simulation tools.

  • Simulation & Testing: Perform CFD and motion simulations to optimize performance, reliability, and material flow.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with engineering, R&D, manufacturing, and business unit teams to ensure feasibility, manufacturability, and scalability.

  • Innovation Projects: Support the Director of Innovation with concept development, prototyping, and validation of new automation technologies.

  • Continuous Improvement: Analyze existing machinery and propose innovative design or process improvements.

  • Documentation & Standards: Maintain design documentation, BOMs, and compliance with internal and customer standards.

  • Mentorship & Technical Support: Provide guidance to junior engineers and collaborate with cross-site engineering teams.



Qualifications and Job Information

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.

  • Experience: 3–7 years of experience in packaging machinery design or industrial automation.

  • Technical Skills:

  • Advanced SolidWorks proficiency (complex assemblies, configurations, detailed drawings).

  • Strong CFD and motion simulation experience (packaging, flow, or thermal systems).

  • Familiarity with electromechanical systems, pneumatics, servo integration, and motion control is preferred.

  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical thinking, communication, and project-management abilities. Comfortable in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
